River Cruises With a Point of View

Most river cruises are wonderful in a general way: a new town every day, good food, the river sliding past the window. A themed river cruise takes that and gives it a reason. You sail in December because you want mulled wine in a Nuremberg market square. You sail in April because you want to see the bulb fields in bloom. You pick a departure because a winemaker is on board, or because the ship stops at breweries instead of cathedrals, or because there will be a kids’ program and other families to share it with.

This site is about those sailings: what each theme is, when it runs, what actually happens on board and ashore, and which lines we have confirmed offer it. Where we name a line, it is because we checked that the theme exists; where we don’t, it is because programs change and we would rather you ask than guess.

Two Kinds of Themed Cruise

It helps to know which kind you are looking at, because they work differently.

The seasonal itinerary

Christmas market and tulip cruises are themed by timing. The ship, the route and the excursions are chosen to put you in the right place in the right weeks. Every guest on board is there for the same reason, and the whole sailing is the theme.

The hosted departure

Wine, beer, music and golf sailings are usually hosted. The line takes a regular itinerary and, on a few dates, adds an expert on board, themed tastings or talks, and some special excursions. Not everyone on the ship is on the program, and you can usually mix themed activities with the regular tours.

Knowing the difference stops surprises. On a hosted departure, ask exactly which days have themed events and whether there is an extra fee or deposit.

How to Pick the Right Themed Sailing

  • Start with the date you can travel. Themes are tied to seasons and to a handful of hosted dates. If you can only go in October, the harvest, not tulips, is your theme.
  • Decide how much theme you want. A full Christmas market itinerary is immersive. A hosted beer departure is one or two events a day on top of a normal cruise.
  • Check who else will be on board. Family departures are full of children; adults-only lines are not. Hosted departures attract people who share the interest — part of the fun.
  • Ask about the weather trade-off. December is cold and dark early; spring can be wet; high summer brings low water on some rivers. None of that spoils a trip if you expect it.
  • Book earlier than usual. Themed dates are limited, and the best cabins go first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a themed river cruise?

It is a regular river cruise with a focus added: a season (Christmas markets, tulips), an interest (wine, beer, music, golf) or a type of traveler (families). Some are whole itineraries built around the theme; others are hosted departures on a normal itinerary, with an expert on board and theme-based tastings, talks or excursions.

Do I have to take part in the theme?

No. On hosted departures the theme events are extras. You can skip the beer tasting or the golf day and do the regular shore excursions instead. On fully themed itineraries (like tulip cruises) the timing and route are the theme, so you get it either way.

How far ahead do themed sailings sell out?

Hosted departures run on only a few dates a year, so they tend to fill earlier than ordinary sailings. Christmas market and tulip cruises are popular too. If you have a date in mind, ask early; our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise can tell you what is still open.

Are themed river cruises more expensive?

It depends on the line and the theme. Some hosted departures cost the same as the regular itinerary; others add a program fee or a deposit (golf programs, for example). We don’t publish prices because they change daily — ask for a quote and we will show you the current numbers side by side.
